Graduate Diploma (Ph.D.) – Application Procedure

Applications Open: Monday October 15, 2018

Application Deadline: Monday May 13, 2019

Step 1: Submit your application online in the School of Graduate Studies Application Portal. Please ensure you review the “How To Apply” instructions.

Step 2: Follow the appropriate steps online, select the relevant Admit Term (2019 Fall = 2199), Academic Program (GINDP), and Academic Plan (GENSTDYDIP), and upload your supporting documentation to the application system (further instructions are listed below).

Step 3: Send us your official transcripts. See list below for documents we require.

Supporting Documents: Upload the following documents directly to your online application:

  • A short statement of intent (750 words). This statement should briefly outline the student’s academic background and other qualifications that prepare her or him for doctoral level work in the field of Gender Studies and Feminist Research; the student’s subfield(s) of interest in Gender Studies and Feminist Research; and how the student anticipates that conceptual and theoretical frameworks drawn from feminist and/or gender theories will inform her or his dissertation thesis work.
  • An abbreviated curriculum vitae (resume) that includes information about scholarships received, background and relevant work experience, and publications and presentations (if any).
  • One (1) academic recommendation from your Supervisor. When completing your application, you will be asked to input your referee’s email address. After you submit your application, your referee will receive an automated email asking them to complete the academic reference online. Once they submit it, the form will come to our office automatically.  *If for some reason your referee cannot complete the form online, they can complete and email us this form.
If your recommendations are submitted via email to gsfr@mcmaster.ca, the applicant should NOT be copied on the email. If submitting the references by postal mail or in person, please ensure that referees have signed across the seal of the envelope.
  • A short writing sample (2000-3000 words), preferably of graduate-level work, that illustrates engagement with research germane to both the home department and the GSFR Graduate Diploma program. The student may submit the same writing sample sent as part of the application to the home Ph.D. department, assuming it illustrates engagement with gender and/or feminist studies.
  • Copies of Transcripts.  You must submit all transcripts, undergraduate and graduate, including the transcript for the first year of your doctoral studies at McMaster. Copies of transcripts submitted to the home department for admission are acceptable, but it is the student’s responsibility to supply these copies with their application for the diploma.
